The Duke and Duchess of Sussex caused a global sensation in January 2020 when they announced their intention to step aside as working royals. Instead Harry and Meghan pledged to become “financially independent” and to divide their time between the UK and North America.

This was completed in March with the 2020 Commonwealth Day service in Westminster Abbey being the last occasion the couple attended in an official capacity.

After a brief stay in Canada the Duke and Duchess moved to California, Meghan’s home state, shortly before it went into coronavirus lockdown.

During the shutdown both royals were seen delivering supplies to vulnerable Los Angeles residents.

Meghan and Harry now live in Montecito, Santa Barbara County, to the north of LA.

Speaking to Us Weekly a source close to the couple insisted they have no regrets.

They commented: “Harry doesn’t have any regrets about leaving the royal family whatsoever and is really happy in Montecito.

“He and Meghan are enjoying their new life in California—being a normal family and having the freedom to make their own decisions without anyone watching over them.

“Harry isn’t looking back, although he does miss his friends at home.”

The Duke and Duchess have also agreed to host and produce a podcast for Spotify.

It’s first episode, a festive special, was released at the end of last month.

It featured a number of celebrity guests including singer Sir Elton John and TV presenter James Cordon.

In November Meghan revealed in a New York Times article she’d suffered a miscarriage earlier in the year.

The Duchess emotionally wrote: “I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second.

“Loss and pain have plagued every one of us in 2020.”

Speaking to Us Weekly a separate royal source said 2020 had been a dramatic year for the Sussexes.

They commented: “2020 was a huge game-changer for Harry and Meghan and it came with its ups and downs—the stress of announcing their departure from the royal family, moving three times, dealing with the pandemic, making huge business decisions, setting up Archewell, coming to terms with the miscarriage.

“It’s brought them closer together and made them a stronger couple.”

Harry is also working on a documentary about mental health with talk show host Oprah Winfrey.
