Graham Smith told Express.co.uk that Prince William become head of state in the next 20 or 30 years is nonsense. Republic is an organisation that campaigns for the monarchy to be abolished and Queen Elizabeth II to be replaced as an elected, head of state.

Mr Smith said: “I think Kate and William should renounce their royal titles.

“Ultimately, Queen Elizabeth II should be the last monarch.

“This whole notion that this guy is going to do very little for the next 20 or 30 years and then become our head of state is nonsense.

“I think that increasing numbers of people will see it as nonsense.

“He has an opportunity to come out and say ‘maybe there should be a vote to decide who replaces my grandmother’.

“But he is not going to do that because he has bought into the whole nonsense of the monarchy.”

However, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams backed the Duke of Cambridge to succeed as King.

Mr Fitzwilliams told Express.co.uk: “William is heir to the throne and Kate will one day be Queen Consort.

The royal commentator added: “Duty is pivotal to members of the royal family.

“The Queen has been dedicated to it throughout her life.

“William and Kate will, I am sure, be ideal for the tasks that face them, on current showing it certainly seems that way.”

Prince William and Kate have not shied away from royal duty during the coronavirus pandemic, stepping up and continuing to undertake engagements virtually and publicly whenever possible.
