Prince Andrew, 60, and Sarah Ferguson, 60, tied the knot on July 23, 1986. The couple were married for a decade and have two daughters together – Princess Beatrice, 32, and Princess Eugenie, 30. While Sarah, affectionately known as ‘Fergie’ and Andrew divorced in 1996, they remain firm friends to this day and even live together at Andrew’s home the Royal Lodge in Great Windsor Park.

Prince Andrew is Queen Elizabeth II’s second son and in keeping with royal tradition was created a duke by his mother on his wedding day.

This meant when Andrew and Fergie married they became the Duke and Duchess of York.

During her marriage to Prince Andrew, Sarah Ferguson was known as the Duchess of York and some even refer to her by that title to this day.

However, as with most high-ranking royal wives, Fergie had another royal title she did not use.

When Fergie married Prince Andrew she became a Princess of the United Kingdom but royal custom prevented her from being known as such.

That’s because traditionally royals with dukedoms or peerages officially go by those titles rather than by ‘prince or princess.’

The same applies to Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, Meghan Markle and Sophie, Countess of Wessex who are all Princesses by marriage.

However, because they gained their royal status via their husbands their full titles are rather clumsy.

Mr MacMarthanne added: “Of the present crop of royal wives, whose husbands hold peerages, they do as a courtesy have the title Princess but not in their own name.

“As an example, and in the case of the Duchess of Cambridge, her formal title is HRH Princess William, Duchess of Cambridge.

“At no point should her own christian name be appended to any of her royal titles as they areal derived from her husband in consequence of her marriage.”

While Sarah Ferguson was not known by her Princess title both her daughters Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice are because they are royals by birth.
